Schoology Raises $1.25 Million For Learning Management Software

Schoology’s mission is to leverage the familiarity of popular social media tools to improve communication and collaboration inside and outside of the classroom. Schoology provides a full suite of learning management tools, including an online gradebook, attendance, test/quizzes, discussion boards, blogs, homework dropboxes, and collaborative course and group pages.

The social network permits cross-school networking allowing for multiple organizations to participate in shared classes, groups, and discussions.

A few weeks ago, a Social Media Cheat Sheet was doing the round. A nice visualization of the pro’s & cons of each social media channel, but with a business/marketing focus. I thought I should do one for social media use in education. However for most of the teachers I work with, our Moodle (EIT Online) is still their primary online teaching environment. So instead I set out to create this poster size guide for teachers, allowing them to compare the functionality and pedagogical advantages of some standard Moodle tools, adding a column to indicate how tricky the tool is to set up.

CloudCourse is a course scheduling system.

Built entirely on App Engine, CloudCourse allows anyone to create and track learning activities. It also offers calendaring, waitlist management and approval features.

CloudCourse is fully integrated with Google Calendar and can be further customized for your organization with the following service provider interfaces (replaceable components):

Sync service – to sync CloudCourse data with your internal systems
Room info service – to schedule classes in your locations
User info service – to look up user profile (employee title, picture, etc)
CloudCourse has been developed in Python, using the Django web application framework and the Closure Javascript library.

If the platform becomes widely used by content creators, an student’s Knewton profile could become a valuable repository of information about the students’ learning style, knowledge base and skill set. A student’s profile can stay with him regardless of the application, which means that once Knewton learns, for instance, that musical rhymes helps a given child learn times tables in McGraw Hill’s 3rd grade math curriculum, that information could follow him locked up in his Knewton profile to his 8th grade algebra class, developed by Holt McDougal.

Stellar is MIT’s online platform for learning and course management [stellar.mit.edu]. Faculty use Stellar to centrally organize course materials, assignments, and class activities, while students use it to access their course work. From a Stellar course site, instructors have the ability to post class announcements, e-mail their class, upload lecture notes, and release solutions to PSETs – all electronically and all online. Course administrators also have access to a host of tools that allow them to manage everything from course membership to recitation selection to student grades (via the Stellar Gradebook pilot).

Currently, Stellar hosts over 1000 sites for nearly 800 courses across all of MIT’s Schools, departments, and programs.

Q4. What are the learning outcomes and results from your project so far?

We have not attempted to measure learning. Our index includes over 110,000 OERs including over 3,500 OpenCourseWares and OERs in 8 languages. Over 1400 users have registered in the past 5 months. We recently added functionality to allow users to register feeds they produce such as their bookmarks and blogs, and to share and comment on OERs in the system. We have conducted research on algorithms for personalized recommendations.
